So what is the Guild of Caterers?
We're a group of Myst/Uru Live fans who also happen to enjoy food a lot- not just eating it, but in preparing and making it as well. Taking our inspiration from the ancient D'ni Guild of Caterers, we've banded together to share, create and discuss new recipes based off what we know of the D'ni and their Ages. The Guild provides a fun and safe place for fans of Uru Live to hang out with one another while the cavern is closed. Cooking is as full of puzzles as any Myst game, and our goal is to create a community within the larger fan community dedicated to tackling these new culinary puzzles together. It's not easy creating recipes that are both original and delicious, but together we hope to accomplish just that!
So how does it work? Members are free to post and discuss recipes in their respective boards- recipes from before the Fall go in D'ni Cuisine, while recipes from Riven or Narayan and other locales in the Myst games go in Recipes of the Ages of Myst, and meals we all know from Earth go in Surface Food. Preferably one should have attempted to have made the dish before posting about it, though suggestions are also welcome.
Newly suggested recipes are always EAYOR- eat at your own risk. While nothing here is likely to actually poison you, you should always be careful and observe basic kitchen safety, and take the recipe with a grain of salt: you have no idea who the person posting it is, and chances are they are not a master chef. Ideally, members of these boards will point out any obvious flaws in a recipe (constructively, not negatively!), and then attempt to make it themselves, providing feedback on how it turned out and how to improve on it. Once two members other than the suggester have posted saying that they've tried the final draft of the recipe and that it turned out well (regardless of whether it meets their individual tastes), the recipe will be "approved" and added to the Guild Approved Recipe Thread that is stickied in each of the Kitchen boards. Recipes in this thread are considered safe to make and edible (preferably delicious as well, but we all have varying tastes!).
The Guild Neighborhood boards are rather self explanatory- we'll post important announcements in the News board, not just regarding the Guild, but also about events that impact the entire MOUL community. In the Neighborhood Classroom board you'll find this very thread and information of basic kitchen safety and cooking techniques, and the Guild Hall thread is where we conduct all official Guild of Caterer's discussions not relating to food- like selecting a new Grand Master or planning our upcoming projects.
Finally, the The Guild of Caterer's Pub board contains social threads for our members to talk about whatever they want: Myst/Uru Live Discussion is for discussion topics related to the Myst franchise, Cyan and the future of Uru Live, or what your favorite part of playing Uru was (and hopefully will be once again!). Anything that doesn't fit in there should go in General Discussion, where anyone can post about anything (keeping in mind that offensive, illegal or flame related material is forbidden!).
Ground rules are just like any forum. Don't get into flame wars or or insult others or call each other names. We're all friends here; you're all free to discuss politics or religion or whatever you want in the General Discussion forum but if things start really getting out of hand there will be bannings.
Post only recipes that are safe for human consumption. Use common sense when creating a recipe; don't try to create an elaborate dish you're not sure will work. Like Writing, cooking is a complicated and hard to master art in which it is paramount to avoid contradictions; a solid foundation is important in keeping your recipe from turning out poorly. Try to keep D'ni foods and those from other Ages original and creative; while some may be based off of Surface recipes, avoid simply stealing an exotic Earth food and giving it a D'ni name. The point is to create our own recipes and to be as original as possible. Feel free to consult preexisting recipes, but try to be creative. Don't worry about your recipe not being as good as one in a Surface cookbook; the whole point of having a community like this is to constructively criticize each other's recipes, with the goal of making them as good as possible.
The Grand Master is the head of the Guild- disputes should be settled by him/her, or their chosen delegates, and the Grand Master runs the forums and makes all major decisions concerning the Guild's direction and future. That said, every Guild member has a voice- the Guild as a whole elects the Grand Master, can override their decisions by a majority vote and call for a new Grand Master if necessary. The Grand Master is also responsible for keeping everyone informed of the Guild's activities and answering any questions anyone might have. While you can always post your questions in the Guild Hall or General Discussion boards for other Guild members to answer, don't hesitate to send a PM to the Grand Master- after all, sometimes it's better to find things out straight from the source.
Other than the above, we're aiming for a pretty laid back atmosphere around here. Remember, contact the Grand Master with any questions you might have- and let's get cooking!
